The Legendary Allure of Britain's AGA Stove
Due to its unique design, the AGA stays on all the time, and has no knobs or settings to speak of. It is insulated, and makes surprisingly efficient use of a single, internal heating unit that distributes consistent yet varied temperatures to its several cooking zones simultaneously.
…it's more like a musical instrument than any adjustable stove experience you’ve become familiar with.
We are looking to buy a new stove - an induction model, not an always-on AGA stove as is discussed in this article - but my research made me remember hearing Jimmy Diresta talk on his podcast some years ago about the one he had installed. I was initially looking to see how an oven/stove can stay burning continuously without using an inordinate amount of fuel, but my inference after reading is a combination of two factors: the oven is highly insulated like a Big Green Egg charcoal grill, and that the heat which does make its way through the insulation serves to heat the house in place of a dedicated wood stove or central air. That being the case, this sort of stove makes most sense in regions that would want heating for the majority of the year.
Do You Want a Boring Floor Lamp or an Ugly Floor Lamp?
Buying a floor lamp should be pretty easy. You don’t have to try one on for size. You don’t have to sit on it to make sure it’s comfortable. You don’t have to worry that, once in your home, it will behave in ways substantially different from what you expected.
And yet I have been shopping for a floor lamp for, conservatively, five years.
Periodically I search for a floor lamp for my office which suffers from a harsh, direct overhead light, upon which journey I happened upon this article where the author bemoans the same factors that brought to me to it. This did lead me to instead search for plug-in wall sconces, the cords for which will need to be obscured either behind furniture or inside some wire molding.
